HEIDENHAIN 236-A301 - Error when homing the axis

Error when homing the axis

The TNC cannot home the specified axis. A fault in the drive is preventing the homing procedure from completing.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm is triggered when the control's homing algorithm cannot successfully complete the reference point search sequence due to missing or inconsistent feedback from reference switches, encoder marks, or incorrect parameter configuration. The control expects a specific sequence of events during homing (limit switch, reference switch, encoder mark) and raises this error when that sequence is violated or incomplete.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Verify Switch Signal in Diagnostic Mode

Navigate to MOD -> Test Functions -> Axis/Spindle Signals. Select the affected axis and observe the reference mark signal (REF) while manually moving the axis over the reference switch position. Signal should clearly change state.

Ensure machine is in safe position before manual movement. Use handwheel at reduced feedrate.

  2. 2

    Check PLC Input Assignment

Access MOD -> Machine Parameters and verify MP6xxx series (PLC inputs). Confirm the correct PLC input is assigned to the axis reference switch. Cross-reference with electrical diagrams.

Common assignments: MP6410.x for linear axes reference inputs. Verify input number matches actual terminal connection.

  3. 3

    Inspect Reference Switch Hardware

Physically inspect the reference switch/cam for mechanical damage, correct positioning, and secure mounting. Check switch cable continuity and proper connection at both switch and PLC input terminal.

Inductive switches require proper target distance (typically 2-4mm). Proximity switches can fail due to magnetic debris accumulation.

  4. 4

    Test Switch at PLC Terminals

Using a multimeter, measure voltage/signal at the PLC input terminal while actuating the reference switch. Should show clear ON/OFF states (typically 24VDC). Compare to adjacent known-good inputs.

Use appropriate measurement tools. Do not short terminals or measure with power off on active switching circuits.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive amplifier requires replacement
  • ·Encoder head replacement needed
  • ·Complex parameter restoration required
  • ·Mechanical repairs beyond basic maintenance

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection and replacement
  • Maintain proper way lubrication schedules
  • Backup machine parameters regularly
  • Monitor drive fault history for trending

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring drive fault history before troubleshooting
  • Incorrect encoder cable routing near power cables
  • Resetting alarms without identifying root cause
  • Improper reference switch adjustment after maintenance
