Heidenhain 231-C280 - C280 Field angle error

C280 Field angle error

Alarm 231-C280 indicates a field angle error detected in the motor commutation on a Heidenhain TNC control. This alarm occurs when the calculated electrical field angle of the motor does not match the expected value based on encoder feedback, typically during initialization or operation of a synchronous motor. The control has detected an inconsistency between the rotor position feedback and the electrical commutation angle.

Root Cause Summary

The field angle error indicates the control cannot properly commutate the motor because the relationship between the encoder's reported rotor position and the motor's actual electrical angle is incorrect or inconsistent. This is fundamentally a mismatch between the mechanical position feedback and the electrical commutation requirements, typically caused by incorrect machine parameters, encoder misalignment, or loss of the commutation reference.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Verify Motor Pole Pairs

Check the motor nameplate or documentation for the correct number of pole pairs. This is typically 3-5 for standard servo motors. Pole pairs = number of poles / 2.

Common Heidenhain motor configurations: standard servo motors typically have 3-4 pole pairs, while torque motors may have 10-20 pole pairs.

  2. 2

    Access Machine Parameter MP1810

Enter MOD mode, navigate to Machine Parameters, select the affected axis, and locate MP1810 (motor pole pairs). Compare the configured value with the motor specification.

Changing MP1810 requires machine manufacturer authorization and will affect motor commutation for all operations.

  3. 3

    Correct and Test

If MP1810 is incorrect, enter the correct pole pair value, save parameters, perform a control restart, and re-execute the encoder commutation routine for this axis.

After changing MP1810, always run the automatic commutation procedure rather than manually setting MP1800.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Motor feedback system hardware failure
  • ·Persistent alarm after parameter correction
  • ·Unknown motor specifications

Prevention

  • Maintain backup copies of working servo configurations
  • Document motor specifications during installation
  • Validate parameters after any configuration changes

Common Mistakes

  • Setting field angle parameters to zero
  • Using parameters from different motor types
  • Not performing control restart after parameter changes
