231-C300

HEIDENHAIN 231-C300 - C300 Zn track error

C300 Zn track error

This TNC 640 error indicates an internal control fault. The issue relates to Motor encoder contaminated or defective.

Root Cause Summary

This tracking error alarm indicates the Z-axis position control loop cannot maintain commanded position within acceptable limits. The root cause is typically either mechanical resistance preventing the axis from following commands, encoder feedback issues providing incorrect position data, or improperly tuned servo parameters that create unstable control loop response.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect Encoder Cable Routing

Power down the machine and examine the entire Z-axis encoder cable from encoder head to the CC (Compact Controller) or MC (Main Computer) connection. Look for cable damage, excessive bending (minimum bend radius 10x cable diameter), pinch points in cable carriers, or routing near motor power cables.

Disconnect machine power and follow LOTO procedures before accessing cable routing areas.

  2. 2

    Check Encoder Connections

Disconnect and reconnect the encoder plug at both the encoder head and control cabinet. Inspect pins for corrosion, bent contacts, or contamination. For EnDat encoders, verify the connector is fully seated and the locking mechanism is engaged. Check coupling connectors in the cable chain for proper mating.

Use compressed air to clean encoder connectors and allow contacts to dry completely before reconnection. EnDat encoders are particularly sensitive to moisture.

  3. 3

    Monitor Encoder Signals with TNCdiag

Navigate to MOD > Diagnosis > Encoder and select the Z-axis encoder. For EnDat encoders, verify EnDat status shows 'OK' with no error bits set. For 1Vpp encoders, access TNCscope (MOD > Diagnosis > Oscilloscope) and monitor the sine/cosine signal quality - signals should be clean sinusoidal waves with amplitude between 0.8-1.2V and 90° phase shift.

Save oscilloscope traces showing good vs. bad signals for future reference when training maintenance staff.

  4. 4

    Perform Cable Resistance Test

With power off and encoder cable disconnected at both ends, use a multimeter to verify continuity on all encoder cable conductors and measure insulation resistance (should be >20MΩ between conductors and to shield). Replace cable if resistance values are out of specification.

Ensure control power is OFF and capacitors are discharged before measuring cable resistance.

Call a technician if:

  • ·TNC encoder input module replacement required
  • ·Encoder replacement needed
  • ·Complex cable routing through machine structure

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cleaning during PM
  • Proper coolant sealing around encoders
  • Cable strain relief inspection
  • Monitor encoder signal quality trends

Common Mistakes

  • Grounding encoder shield at both ends
  • Using wrong cable type for replacement
  • Ignoring intermittent signal issues
  • Contaminating encoder during cleaning
