231-C370

HEIDENHAIN 231-C370 - C370 Angle error motor encdr.

C370 Angle error motor encdr.

This TNC 640 error indicates an internal control fault. The issue relates to Wrong commutation angle at reference position.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm fundamentally indicates that the TNC control detected an unacceptable angular deviation between commanded motor position and actual motor encoder feedback, exceeding the configured monitoring threshold. The root cause is either degraded position feedback from the motor encoder system or the motor's physical inability to follow commands due to mechanical or electrical drive issues. The %1 parameter identifies which axis motor encoder triggered the fault.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect Motor Encoder Cable

Power down and inspect the motor encoder cable from motor feedback connector to drive input. Check for pinched cables in cable carriers, damaged shielding, or contamination at connector contacts. Motor encoders typically use 1Vpp or EnDat/Fanuc protocols on Heidenhain systems.

Disconnect power and discharge DC bus capacitors before touching cable connections to prevent electrical shock.

  2. 2

    Check Encoder Signal Quality

Access Test Mode > Encoder Test on the TNC control. Select the affected motor encoder and observe signal amplitude and symmetry while manually rotating the motor shaft slowly. Signals should show clean sinusoidal waveforms with 1Vpp amplitude (±10%) and 90° phase relationship.

For EnDat encoders, the control will show communication error counters. Any incrementing error count indicates cable or encoder issues.

  3. 3

    Verify Cable Shielding and Grounding

Ensure motor encoder cable shield is properly terminated at the drive end only (not both ends) and has low-impedance connection to cabinet ground. Check that encoder cables are separated from power cables by minimum 100mm in cable carriers.

Intermittent angle errors during rapid traverse often indicate EMI pickup from inadequate shielding separation.

  4. 4

    Swap Encoder Cable

If available, temporarily replace the motor encoder cable with a known-good cable of identical specification. Re-test axis motion. If alarm clears, replace the defective cable permanently.

Ensure replacement cable matches original specification (1Vpp, EnDat 2.2, etc.) and is properly shielded for motor encoder applications.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·CC controller replacement required
  • ·Encoder replacement on critical production machine
  • ·Multiple axes showing similar symptoms

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection during PM
  • Maintain proper cable routing away from heat sources
  • Keep encoder connectors clean and dry
  • Monitor encoder signal quality trends

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping commutation calibration after encoder replacement
  • Not checking cable shield continuity
  • Ignoring intermittent signal quality issues
  • Reusing damaged encoder cables
