81C0 DQ com error motor encdr Po= Dev= Error=

This TNC 640 error indicates an internal control fault. The issue relates to DRIVE-CLiQ communication to the speed encoder (motor encoder.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm specifically indicates the inverter has lost valid communication with the motor encoder required for motor commutation. The Error=%6 parameter provides the specific EnDat error code or communication fault type. Unlike position encoder errors, this fault prevents the drive from properly controlling motor torque and will immediately disable the axis drive output.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Identify affected axis and cable routing

Note the axis number from %1 parameter in alarm message. Trace the motor encoder cable (typically labeled X411) from the inverter to the motor encoder head, inspecting the entire cable route through cable carriers and conduits.

Use PlcProgramInfo or the TNCdiag diagnostic tool to capture the exact Error=%6 code which indicates specific EnDat communication fault types (CRC error, timeout, etc.)

  2. 2

Verify cable separation from power lines

Ensure motor encoder cable maintains minimum 10cm (4 inch) separation from motor power cables (U, V, W phases). Check that shielded encoder cable has 360-degree shield termination at both inverter and motor ends, not just drain wire connection.

Disconnect all power to the machine before inspecting cable routing or handling encoder cables

  3. 3

    Inspect cable for mechanical damage

Examine cable sheath for cuts, abrasion, pinch points, or excessive bending radius (should be >10x cable diameter). Pay special attention to cable carrier entry/exit points and motor connection areas where flexing occurs.

Heidenhain motor encoders typically use 17-pin or 15-pin connectors; even small amounts of coolant or oil ingress can cause intermittent EnDat errors before complete failure

  4. 4

    Perform cable substitution test

If possible, temporarily swap the motor encoder cable with a known-good cable from a functioning axis. Clear the alarm and cycle the axis. If alarm does not return, replace the motor encoder cable with genuine Heidenhain cable of correct length and type.

Non-genuine encoder cables often lack proper impedance matching for EnDat signals and will cause intermittent 81C0 errors especially during rapid acceleration

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Multiple DRIVE-CLiQ nodes affected
  • ·Safety-critical axis involved

Prevention

  • Regular DRIVE-CLiQ cable inspection
  • Monitor communication error counters
  • Maintain proper cable routing away from power lines
  • Keep DRIVE-CLiQ connectors clean and dry

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring intermittent communication errors
  • Using non-DRIVE-CLiQ cables for connections
  • Exceeding maximum cable length limits
  • Hot-swapping DRIVE-CLiQ connections while powered
