HEIDENHAIN 1A0-0177 - Facing slide: Spindle is not aligned

Facing slide: Spindle is not aligned

The facing-slide function was activated while the spindle direction was not parallel to the Z axis of the input coordinate system. Alignment must be established first.

Root Cause Summary

The facing slide requires precise spindle angular alignment to prevent collision between the slide tool and the rotating spindle workpiece or chuck. The TNC monitors spindle orientation feedback and will not permit facing slide motion unless the spindle is properly oriented and locked in position. This alarm protects against potentially catastrophic collisions on multi-function machines where the facing slide operates perpendicular to the spindle axis.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Verify M19 in NC Program

Review the NC program and confirm M19 (spindle orientation) is programmed before any facing slide axis movement commands. Check that no M3/M4/M5 commands cancel the orientation before facing slide motion.

On multi-spindle machines, ensure you're using the correct M19 variant (M19.1, M19.2, etc.) for the specific spindle associated with the facing slide.

  2. 2

    Test Spindle Orientation Manually

In Manual Operation mode, execute M19 from the MDI and observe if the spindle orients to the correct position. Watch for timeout errors or positioning failures in the status display.

Ensure no tool or workpiece collision can occur during manual spindle orientation testing.

  3. 3

    Check Spindle In-Position Signal

Go to MOD > Diagnosis > PLC to view PLC inputs/markers. Locate the spindle orientation complete signal (machine-specific, typically an input from the spindle drive) and verify it activates when M19 completes.

The signal name varies by machine builder - look for keywords like 'SPINDL_ORI_OK', 'M19_COMPL', or consult machine electrical documentation.

  4. 4

    Review Machine Parameter MP4510

Check MP4510 (timeout for spindle orientation). If set too low, M19 may timeout before the spindle reaches position. Typical values are 5-10 seconds. Increase if mechanical orientation is slow.

After changing MP4510, cycle power to the control or execute a PLC restart for the change to take effect.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·If alignment cannot be achieved after following all steps
  • ·If mechanical damage or wear is beyond basic repair capabilities

Prevention

  • Perform regular alignment checks using precision tools every 6 months
  • Maintain stable environmental conditions in the workshop to prevent thermal drift
  • Follow a strict maintenance schedule for inspecting and tightening fasteners
  • Use vibration dampening solutions if the machine is in a high-vibration area

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring small misalignments, which can worsen over time and cause major damage
  • Over-tightening bolts during reassembly, leading to stripped threads or component stress
