HAAS Alarm 72 - Spindle Overload Excessive Current

Spindle overload or excessive current

This alarm is generated when the spindle drive detects current draw exceeding the programmed overload threshold or when regenerative power exceeds safe limits during deceleration. The spindle drive monitors motor current continuously and compares it against internal fault limits and Parameter 34 spindle load percentage. Immediate spindle stop occurs to protect the drive electronics and spindle motor from thermal damage.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 72 fires when the spindle motor current exceeds the threshold set in parameter 71 (SPINDLE OVERLOAD CURRENT), typically due to excessive cutting loads, mechanical binding, or spindle bearing failure. The NGC control monitors spindle current through the drive feedback and triggers this alarm to protect the spindle motor from thermal damage.

Safety

  • Never restart spindle immediately after overload alarm; allow adequate cooling time
  • Do not attempt to increase spindle speed to override overload alarm
  • Wear safety glasses when inspecting spindle; internal components may be hot

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check current cutting parameters

Review active G-code for excessive feed rates, spindle speeds, and depth of cut. Compare against tool manufacturer recommendations.

Use CURRENT COMMANDS display to see real-time feed and spindle values during alarm

  2. 2

    Inspect cutting tool condition

Remove and examine tool for wear, chipping, or damage. Dull tools require significantly more spindle torque.

Always use proper tool removal procedures and lock out spindle rotation

  3. 3

    Reduce cutting parameters

Decrease feed rate by 25-50% and reduce depth of cut. Restart program and monitor spindle load on CURRENT COMMANDS screen.

Use feed rate override during testing to find optimal cutting parameters

  4. 4

    Verify workpiece setup

Check workpiece clamping for rigidity and ensure material matches program specifications. Loose workpieces cause chatter and increased spindle load.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Spindle bearing replacement required
  • ·Motor winding failure confirmed
  • ·Drive module replacement needed
  • ·Spindle rebuild necessary

Prevention

  • Monitor spindle current regularly on CURRENT COMMANDS display
  • Maintain proper cutting parameters and sharp tools
  • Keep spindle and coolant system clean
  • Perform regular spindle bearing maintenance per schedule

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual increase in spindle current over time
  • Continuing to run with dull tools
  • Setting parameter 71 too high to avoid alarms
  • Not checking for chip buildup around spindle
