HAAS Alarm 71 - Coolant Pump Pressure Low

Coolant pump pressure low

This alarm indicates the coolant system pressure switch has detected insufficient pressure at the coolant pump outlet. The IOCON board monitors the pressure switch input and triggers this fault when pressure remains below the setpoint for the programmed time delay. The machine will stop coolant flow commands and may prevent cycle start depending on the M-code configuration and parameter settings for coolant interlock.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 71 fires when the coolant pressure switch (typically set at 15-25 PSI) detects insufficient pressure from the coolant pump system. The NGC control monitors this switch through the machine I/O and will prevent spindle operation to protect cutting tools and spindle bearings from overheating.

Safety

  • Ensure coolant pump is completely stopped before inspecting or replacing components
  • Wear proper PPE when handling coolant; some formulations can irritate skin
  • Do not attempt to override pressure alarm without identifying root cause

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check coolant tank level

Open electrical cabinet door and visually inspect coolant tank. Level should be above minimum fill line (typically 2-3 inches from bottom).

Ensure machine is in EMERGENCY STOP before opening electrical cabinet

  2. 2

    Refill coolant tank

Add appropriate coolant mixture (typically 5-10% concentration) until level reaches maximum fill line. Use only Haas-approved coolant or equivalent.

Check coolant concentration with refractometer - low concentration can cause biological growth and pump issues

  3. 3

    Prime pump system

Press COOLANT button on control panel to manually activate pump and purge air from lines. Monitor pressure gauge if equipped.

May take 30-60 seconds to fully prime system after refill

  4. 4

    Reset alarm and test

Press RESET button, then test coolant flow with M08 command in MDI mode.

Do not run spindle without confirmed coolant flow

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Pump motor replacement required
  • ·Electrical troubleshooting beyond basic connections
  • ·Repeated failures after repairs

Prevention

  • Maintain proper coolant level and concentration
  • Replace coolant filters regularly (monthly in high-use environments)
  • Monitor coolant for contamination and biological growth
  • Perform weekly coolant system inspection

Common Mistakes

  • Running machine without coolant to 'test' alarm
  • Using incorrect coolant concentration
  • Ignoring small coolant leaks that lead to air ingress
  • Overtightening pressure switch causing damage
