HAAS Alarm 79 - Servo Drive Power Module Overheat

Servo drive power module overheat

This alarm indicates that the thermal sensor on one of the servo drive power modules has detected excessive heat buildup. The servo amplifiers in the control cabinet have internal temperature monitoring that will fault when temperatures exceed safe operating limits. When triggered, the machine will disable axis motion to prevent damage to the servo drive components.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 79 fires when the servo drive power module temperature exceeds safe operating limits, typically due to cooling system failures or excessive current draw. The NGC control monitors drive temperatures and triggers thermal protection to prevent permanent damage to power transistors and capacitors.

Safety

  • Do not touch servo drive heatsink or power module during operation; high temperature burn risk
  • Ensure adequate electrical clearance around servo drive before installing cooling duct
  • Never block servo drive cooling fan intake or exhaust; thermal damage will result

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check drive cooling fans

Open electrical cabinet and visually inspect all servo drive cooling fans for rotation. Listen for unusual noise or grinding sounds.

Ensure main power is OFF and LOTO procedures are followed before opening electrical cabinet.

  2. 2

    Test fan voltage

Using multimeter, verify 24VDC supply to cooling fans at fan connector terminals. Check for loose connections or damaged wiring.

Fan voltage should be steady 24VDC ±10%. Fluctuating voltage indicates power supply issues.

  3. 3

    Clean fan assemblies

Remove accumulated debris, oil mist, and dust from fan blades and heat sink fins using compressed air and degreaser.

Clean fans monthly in high-debris environments to maintain optimal cooling performance.

  4. 4

    Replace failed fans

Replace any non-functioning cooling fans with Haas OEM parts. Verify proper airflow direction and secure mounting.

Use only Haas-approved replacement fans to ensure proper CFM rating and electrical compatibility.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo drive replacement required
  • ·Multiple simultaneous drive failures
  • ·Persistent overheating after cooling system repair

Prevention

  • Monthly cooling fan inspection and cleaning
  • Monitor electrical cabinet ambient temperature
  • Regular heat sink cleaning in contaminated environments
  • Optimize program feed rates and acceleration settings

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring early cooling fan noise warnings
  • Operating with blocked cabinet ventilation
  • Using non-OEM replacement fans with incorrect CFM ratings
  • Continuing operation after repeated thermal alarms
