Haas 405 - RS-232 ILLEGAL PROG NAME | Haas CNC Alarm

RS-232 ILLEGAL PROG NAME

This alarm occurs when the Haas control receives a program via RS-232 but the program name format does not meet the required naming convention. The MOCON expects program names to be the letter O followed by up to five digits (O00001 to O99999) with no letters, special characters, or spaces. Any deviation from this strict format causes the control to reject the incoming program and post this alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 405 ARM IN TIMEOUT occurs when the automatic tool changer arm fails to return to the fully retracted 'in' position within the timeout period defined by Parameter 71 (typically 3-5 seconds). The NGC control monitors the ARM IN proximity switch signal and triggers this alarm when the switch doesn't activate after initiating a tool change cycle.

Safety

  • Arm may move unexpectedly

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check ARM IN Switch Status

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and verify the ARM IN input status while manually observing arm position.

The ARM IN input should show ON when arm is fully retracted and OFF when extended

  2. 2

    Inspect Proximity Switch Alignment

Check the ARM IN proximity switch mounting and target alignment. Switch should be within 2-4mm of the target when arm is in position.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before accessing tool changer area

  3. 3

    Test Switch Continuity

With power off, disconnect the ARM IN switch connector and test continuity across switch terminals while activating the switch manually.

Most Haas proximity switches are 3-wire DC type - check brown (+), blue (-), and black (signal) wires

  4. 4

    Verify Wiring Connections

Inspect all connections from the ARM IN switch back to the machine control board, checking for loose, corroded, or damaged wiring.

Follow the wire routing through the cable track - this is a common failure point

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Proximity switch replacement required
  • ·Major pneumatic system overhaul needed
  • ·Tool changer arm mechanical rebuild required

Prevention

  • Daily lubrication of tool changer arm pivot points
  • Weekly air pressure verification
  • Monthly proximity switch cleaning
  • Regular chip and coolant cleanup around tool changer

Common Mistakes

  • Setting Parameter 71 timeout too high to mask mechanical problems
  • Ignoring gradual increase in arm movement time
  • Not checking air pressure during actual tool change cycles
  • Overlooking cable track wear on proximity switch wiring
