SRVO-058

Fanuc Robot SRVO-058 - FSSB init error

FSSB init error

An FSSB initialization error occurred during controller startup. The servo system could not establish communication with the expected number or type of servo amplifiers during initialization.

Root Cause Summary

SRVO-058 FSSB init error occurs when the R-30iA/R-30iB controller cannot establish proper communication with all servo amplifiers in the FSSB (Fiber Optic Servo Serial Bus) chain during power-up initialization. This alarm indicates a mismatch between the expected servo configuration defined in system parameters and what the controller actually detects on the FSSB network, or a physical communication failure in the fiber optic network between the controller and amplifiers.

Safety

  • Always verify robot is in a safe stopped state before entering the work envelope
  • Use T1 mode when testing after clearing motion or servo alarms

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down and inspect all FSSB connections

Turn off controller and amplifier power. Inspect every FSSB fiber connection starting at CN1A/CN1B on the main CPU board, through each amplifier's IN and OUT ports. Look for loose connections, damaged cable jackets, kinked cables, or bent ferrules. The orange fiber cables should have positive latching connectors.

Always power down before disconnecting fiber optic cables. Never look directly into fiber optic cable ends as laser light can damage eyes.

  2. 2

    Clean fiber optic connectors

Use proper fiber optic cleaning tools (lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol, or specialized fiber cleaning pens). Clean both the cable ferrule and the receptacle on each amplifier. Contamination from dust, oil, or fingerprints is a common cause of FSSB communication failures.

Keep dust caps on unused fiber ports. In dusty environments, clean and reseat FSSB connections every 6 months as preventive maintenance.

  3. 3

    Verify FSSB chain topology

Confirm the fiber chain runs: CPU CN1A → Amp1 IN → Amp1 OUT → Amp2 IN → ... → Last Amp OUT → CPU CN1B. The loop must be complete. Check that no amplifier is bypassed and the chain returns to the controller.

Take photos of the FSSB routing during initial installation or after verified working condition. This documentation is invaluable for troubleshooting.

  4. 4

Test with known good fiber cables

If available, substitute suspect fiber cables one at a time with known good cables. FSSB cables are standard LC-LC duplex fiber optic cables, but Fanuc-supplied cables are recommended for reliability. Focus on cables that run through moving parts like cabinet doors.

Keep spare 1m and 3m FSSB fiber cables in your site spare parts kit. Part numbers: A66L-6001-00##-#-##L series.
