SRVO-061

Fanuc Robot SRVO-061 - CKAL alarm (clock error)

CKAL alarm (clock error)

A clock error has been detected in the servo amplifier. The internal timing or clock circuit in the amplifier has a fault.

Root Cause Summary

SRVO-061 CKAL alarm indicates a critical clock signal error within the servo amplifier's internal timing circuit. This alarm typically results from hardware failure in the amplifier's clock generation or synchronization circuitry, and is one of the more serious servo amplifier faults requiring immediate attention. Unlike software or configuration errors, this alarm almost always points to physical component degradation or failure within the amplifier module itself.

Safety

  • Always verify robot is in a safe stopped state before entering the work envelope
  • Use T1 mode when testing after clearing motion or servo alarms

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Document alarm occurrence details

From the teach pendant, navigate to MENU → ALARM → F5 (HIST) to review alarm history. Note which axis amplifier (displayed in the alarm detail as 'Axis X') is affected, the exact time of occurrence, and whether the alarm is intermittent or persistent. Record the amplifier serial number from the physical label on the suspect amplifier module.

Check if the alarm occurs during specific motion patterns or always at power-up. Power-up failures indicate a hard circuit fault, while motion-triggered alarms may suggest thermal-related issues.

  2. 2

    Perform controlled power cycle

Execute a complete power-down sequence: Press and hold FCTN + SHIFT on teach pendant, then perform an orderly shutdown if possible. Turn off the main power disconnect and wait a minimum of 5 minutes to allow all capacitors to fully discharge. Power up and observe if the alarm recurs immediately or after motion execution.

Ensure all motion is stopped and no programs are running before power cycling. Verify E-stop circuit is engaged during the shutdown procedure.

  3. 3

    Check amplifier LED diagnostics

Open the controller cabinet and locate the affected axis amplifier. Observe the LED indicators on the amplifier faceplate during power-up. A clock error typically manifests as an abnormal LED pattern—refer to the amplifier label for the LED diagnostic chart. Normal operation shows green READY LED; red LEDs or no LEDs indicate hardware failure.

Work on electrical panels should only be performed by qualified personnel. Verify lockout/tagout procedures and ensure no voltage is present when working inside the cabinet.

  4. 4

    Verify amplifier firmware version

From teach pendant: MENU → SYSTEM → F1 (TYPE) → F5 (SVAMP). Compare the firmware version of the affected amplifier against other axes. Mismatched or corrupted firmware can occasionally cause clock synchronization issues. Note the hardware series (αi-series, β-series, etc.) for replacement compatibility.

If firmware versions are inconsistent across axes, this may indicate a previous incomplete update attempt. However, true CKAL alarms are rarely firmware-related—hardware replacement is typically required.

  5. 5

    Prepare for amplifier replacement

Since SRVO-061 indicates internal amplifier failure, arrange for a replacement amplifier matching the exact model and firmware. Document all servo parameters for the affected axis from MENU → SYSTEM → Variables → $SCR_GRP[x].$OVRTRIP. After replacement, you'll need to restore amplifier configuration and perform servo tuning verification.

Take photos of all DIP switch settings and cable connections before removing the failed amplifier. Some older R-30iA controllers require manual servo parameter entry after amplifier replacement.
