Fanuc Alarm PS077 - Excessive Subprogram Nesting

TOO MANY SUB-MACRO NESTING

Fanuc PS077: The subprogram or macro call nesting depth has exceeded the maximum allowed level. Fanuc limits how deeply subroutines and macros can call each other (typically 4 levels of M98 nesting).

Root Cause Summary

Alarm PS077 occurs when the CNC detects subprogram nesting depth has exceeded the maximum allowed levels during program execution. Fanuc controls typically allow 4 levels of M98 subprogram nesting on older controls (0i/16i/18i) and up to 10-15 levels on newer series (30i/31i/32i), depending on system configuration and parameter settings. This alarm prevents stack overflow and memory corruption from recursive or excessively nested subprogram calls.

Safety

  • Check for infinite loops

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the active program structure and count nesting levels. Navigate to EDIT mode and trace all M98 Pxxxx calls through each subprogram level to identify maximum depth reached.

  2. 2

Check parameter 3107 (subprogram nesting level limit). Navigate SYSTEM > PARAM > search P3107. Typical values: 4 for 0i/16i/18i series, 10 for 30i/31i/32i series. Verify current program does not exceed this limit.

  3. 3

Restructure the part program to reduce nesting depth. Replace deeply nested M98 calls with sequential subprogram calls at higher levels, or consolidate repetitive operations into fewer subprogram levels.

  4. 4

If nesting is legitimately required and control supports higher limits, consult Fanuc documentation for your series to determine if parameter 3107 can be safely increased within hardware memory constraints.

Increasing nesting depth beyond factory defaults may cause memory issues or system instability on older control models with limited RAM
