Fanuc Alarm IO0001 - I/O Device Not Ready

Device Not Ready

Fanuc IO0001: The external input/output device (RS-232, USB, data server) is not ready to communicate. The CNC attempted to access the device but it is not powered, not connected, or has not completed its initialization.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm IO0001 indicates the CNC cannot communicate with an external I/O device used for program transfer, typically a memory card reader, USB device, or RS-232 interface. This alarm occurs when the CNC attempts to access the device but receives no ready signal, often due to hardware connection issues, device not properly mounted, or I/O channel configuration errors in parameters.

Safety

  • Cannot transfer program

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Remove and reinsert the memory card or USB device ensuring it is fully seated and locked into the slot. Check for physical damage to the device or slot contacts.

  2. 2

Navigate to SYSTEM > FILE and verify the device appears in the device list. For memory cards, check if the device icon shows as available (not grayed out).

  3. 3

If device is not recognized, format the device externally using FAT or FAT32 file system (not exFAT or NTFS). Maximum capacity varies by control series: 0i/16i/18i typically support up to 2GB, 30i/31i/32i support up to 32GB.

Formatting will erase all data on the device. Backup programs before formatting.

  4. 4

Test with a known good memory card or USB device. If new device works, replace the faulty media. If problem persists, inspect parameter 0020 bit 5 (USB) and bit 6 (memory card) to verify the interface is enabled.
