Fanuc 547 - Spindle regenerative limit

SPINDLE REGENERATIVE LIMIT

Fanuc spindle alarm 547: SPINDLE REGENERATIVE LIMIT. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 547 occurs when the spindle motor generates excessive regenerative power during deceleration that cannot be properly dissipated by the drive system. This typically happens when the spindle is forced to decelerate too quickly, the regenerative discharge resistor has failed or is undersized, or the DC bus voltage exceeds safe limits due to improper braking conditions.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the machine and visually inspect the regenerative discharge resistor unit for signs of burning, discoloration, or physical damage.

Allow resistor to cool for 30 minutes before inspection as it retains heat.

  2. 2

Using a multimeter, measure the resistance value of the discharge resistor and compare to specification on the resistor label or drive manual (typically 20-100 ohms depending on model).

Ensure all power is disconnected and capacitors are discharged before measuring resistance.

  3. 3

Check continuity of all wiring connections between the spindle drive regenerative terminals and the discharge resistor, including thermal switch if equipped.

  4. 4

Replace the regenerative discharge resistor if resistance is out of specification or physical damage is evident. Verify proper wire gauge and terminal tightness during reinstallation.
