Fanuc 518 - Spindle gear change error

SPINDLE GEAR CHANGE ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 518: SPINDLE GEAR CHANGE ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 518 occurs when the spindle fails to complete a gear change operation within the programmed time limit or when the gear position feedback does not match the commanded gear position. This is typically caused by mechanical issues preventing gear engagement, faulty position sensors failing to confirm gear position, or hydraulic/pneumatic system problems affecting the gear shift mechanism.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access the spindle head and locate the gear position sensors (typically proximity switches mounted near the gear shift mechanism).

  2. 2

Check sensor LED indicators or use a multimeter to verify sensors are powered and switching properly when the gear mechanism moves manually.

Disconnect spindle motor power and lock out machine before manual manipulation.

  3. 3

Inspect sensor mounting brackets for looseness and verify correct air gap distance (typically 0.5-2mm for proximity sensors) between sensor face and target.

  4. 4

Check sensor wiring for damage, loose connections at the sensor and at the spindle drive connector, and verify signals reach the spindle drive using ladder diagnostics or I/O status screen.
