Fanuc Alarm 5197 - FSSB: OPEN TIME OUT

SERVO ALARM 5197

FSSB open timeout during initialization. Check optical fiber cable connections between CNC and first servo amplifier.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 5197 FSSB OPEN TIME OUT indicates the CNC control failed to establish communication with servo amplifiers via the FSSB (Fiber Servo Serial Bus) optical network during power-up initialization. This is typically caused by damaged or disconnected fiber optic cables, improper FSSB loop configuration, or faulty servo amplifier interface boards preventing the FSSB handshake from completing within the timeout period.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the CNC completely. Inspect all fiber optic cables between the CNC FSSB connector (typically on CPU board or interface board) through each servo amplifier and back to CNC. Check for disconnected cables, damaged connectors, or kinked/crushed fiber sections.

Do not look directly into fiber optic cable ends during inspection as laser light can damage eyes. Handle fiber connectors only by the ferrule housing, never pull on cables.

  2. 2

Remove each fiber connector, inspect the ferrule end for contamination or scratches using a fiber scope if available. Clean all fiber connectors using lint-free fiber cleaning swabs and isopropyl alcohol, or use a fiber optic cleaning pen. Verify correct seating with audible click when reconnecting.

  3. 3

Verify FSSB loop continuity: fiber should run from CNC FSSB OUT connector to first amplifier FSSB IN, then amplifier FSSB OUT to next amplifier FSSB IN (daisy chain), with final amplifier FSSB OUT returning to CNC FSSB IN connector, forming complete loop.

  4. 4

Power on CNC and observe servo amplifier LEDs during boot. All amplifiers should show normal FSSB communication LEDs (typically green solid or blinking). Check DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > FSSB STATUS screens to verify which axis amplifiers are detected on the FSSB network.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·CNC FSSB interface board replacement required
  • ·Multiple servo amplifiers showing failures
  • ·Parameter corruption with no backup available

Prevention

  • Regularly inspect FSSB optical cables for damage
  • Maintain proper cable bend radius during installation
  • Keep spare FSSB cables and termination resistors in stock
  • Perform regular parameter backups

Common Mistakes

  • Touching optical fiber ends during inspection
  • Forgetting termination resistor on last amplifier
  • Mixing different FSSB cable types
  • Not following proper ESD procedures when handling interface boards
