Fanuc 517 - Spindle synchronization error

SPINDLE SYNCHRONIZATION ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 517: SPINDLE SYNCHRONIZATION ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

The 517 alarm indicates the spindle motor position feedback is not synchronizing properly with the commanded position from the spindle drive. This typically occurs when the encoder signals are corrupted, the motor cannot follow commands due to mechanical binding, or there is a mismatch in drive parameters causing the control loop to lose lock.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check encoder cable connections at both motor and drive ends for tightness, corrosion, or pin damage. Verify cable routing away from power lines and verify cable shield continuity.

Disconnect power before inspecting connections to prevent electrical shock.

  2. 2

Access diagnostics screen and monitor encoder feedback signals (A, B, Z phase) during manual spindle rotation. Look for missing pulses, erratic counts, or no signal change.

  3. 3

Inspect encoder head at motor for contamination from coolant, chips, or oil. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary and verify air gap if non-contact type.

Do not use compressed air above 30 PSI on encoder components as this may damage internal elements.

  4. 4

Swap encoder cable with known good spare or temporary cable to isolate cable fault. If alarm clears, replace cable permanently.
