Fanuc 283 - Normal direction axis not found

NORMAL DIRECTION AXIS NOT FOUND

Fanuc PS program alarm 283: NORMAL DIRECTION AXIS NOT FOUND. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 283 occurs when the control cannot determine the normal direction axis for a cutter compensation or surface machining operation. This typically happens with G41/G42 cutter compensation, G40.1/G41.1/G42.1 3D cutter compensation, or specialized cycles when the control cannot calculate which axis is perpendicular to the cutting plane. The alarm indicates missing, conflicting, or improperly defined geometry information needed to establish the tool path normal vector.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the program before the alarm line and verify G17, G18, or G19 is active before G41/G42 is commanded.

  2. 2

Check that the compensation move contains motion in both axes of the selected plane (e.g., G17 requires X and/or Y movement, not just Z).

  3. 3

Ensure the plane selection has not been inadvertently cancelled or changed between compensation activation and the current move.

  4. 4

If using rotation or tilted work plane commands (G68.2), verify the coordinate system transformation is correctly defined before applying compensation.

Mixing coordinate rotation and cutter compensation requires careful programming sequence
