Fanuc 285 - Illegal command in look ahead control

ILLEGAL COMMAND IN LOOK AHEAD CONTROL

Fanuc PS program alarm 285: ILLEGAL COMMAND IN LOOK AHEAD CONTROL. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 285 occurs when the CNC's look-ahead function encounters a command or sequence it cannot process during multi-block trajectory planning. This typically happens when incompatible commands are mixed within a high-speed machining block, or when certain non-motion commands interfere with the look-ahead buffer's ability to pre-calculate the toolpath.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Identify the N-block number displayed with the alarm and locate that line in your part program.

  2. 2

Check for prohibited commands within the look-ahead section: work coordinate changes (G54-G59), tool length offset changes (G43/G44), coordinate system rotation (G68), or mirror image (G51.1) commands mixed with motion blocks.

  3. 3

Separate incompatible commands by inserting a G09 (exact stop) or M00 (program stop) before the problematic command to force buffer flush.

Adding exact stops will reduce machining speed but ensures proper command execution

  4. 4

Re-run the program from several blocks before the alarm point to verify the correction.
