Fanuc Alarm 233 - DEVICE BUSY

SYSTEM ALARM 233

Fanuc alarm 233: SYSTEM ALARM 233. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm 233 DEVICE BUSY occurs when multiple processes or programs attempt to access the same RS-232-C serial communication port simultaneously. This is typically caused by conflicting I/O operations such as a running macro reading/writing to the port while an operator attempts manual communication, or dual PMC ladder logic attempting concurrent serial access.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press SYSTEM key, navigate to PROGRAM > check if any macro programs are currently executing in background. Look for programs using DPRNT, POPEN, PCLOS, or file I/O operations.

  2. 2

Check parameter 20 (I/O channel selection for RS-232-C). Verify parameters 100-109 (RS-232-C port configuration) to identify which port is assigned. Note parameter 101 bit 0 (STX) and bit 1 (output device selection).

  3. 3

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM > search for parameter 3107 (DNC operation mode). If set to 1 or 2, DNC operations may conflict with manual RS-232-C access attempts.

  4. 4

Reset the alarm, wait for current macro serial operation to complete (check program execution status), then retry the desired RS-232-C communication. Consider adding M-code wait logic in macro programs using serial I/O.

Do not interrupt macro execution forcibly during file write operations as this may corrupt data transfer

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Hardware failure of RS-232C board
  • ·Parameter corruption requiring system restore
  • ·Multiple alarms occurring simultaneously

Prevention

  • Implement communication scheduling to avoid simultaneous access
  • Regularly verify RS-232C parameter settings
  • Use proper cable termination and shielding

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting communication while DNC is active
  • Not checking parameter 20 setting before troubleshooting
  • Forgetting to power cycle after parameter changes
