Fanuc 184 - Polar coordinate illegal axis

POLAR COORDINATE ILLEGAL AXIS

Fanuc PS program alarm 184: POLAR COORDINATE ILLEGAL AXIS. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 184 occurs when the polar coordinate interpolation command (G12.1/G13.1 or G15/G16) is programmed with an incorrect or incompatible axis specification. The control expects a valid plane selection and linear/rotary axis pair for polar coordinate transformation, but the programmed axes do not meet the system requirements or are not properly configured.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the program line causing the alarm and identify the G12.1 or G13.1 command and the axes specified.

  2. 2

Verify that one linear axis (X, Y, or Z) and one rotary axis (typically C-axis) are specified for the active plane (G17, G18, or G19).

  3. 3

Check the plane selection command immediately before the polar coordinate command. For G12.1 in G17 plane, typical format is G12.1 with X or Y as linear and C as rotary.

  4. 4

Correct the axis specification to match the required linear-rotary pair for polar interpolation and re-run the program.
