Siemens 9050 - PROFIBUS I/O: Sign of life failure, logical slot / I/O area address
Alarm 9050 indicates loss of cyclical communication (sign of life) from a PROFIBUS I/O device assigned to a specific logical slot in the NCK's I/O area mapping. This occurs when the PROFIBUS master (840D control) fails to receive expected data telegrams within the configured watchdog timeout period, preventing synchronized I/O data exchange with the peripheral module.

Safety
Causes and Fixes
Access Diagnostics > PROFIBUS > Slot Status in HMI menu. Verify the device listed in alarm parameter %1 shows 'offline' or 'no response' status. Note the PROFIBUS address (PA) and slot number.
Check physical PROFIBUS connectors (D-sub or M12 connectors) at the slave device and control cabinet. Verify terminated cable (120Ω resistors at line ends), no loose contacts, cable shielding continuous.
Do NOT disconnect PROFIBUS while system is powered. Use bus isolation procedures if available.
In NCK menu, navigate to Parameters > Machine Data > 30300 (PROFIBUS Watchdog Time). If I/O cycle time is >500ms, increase MD 30300 proportionally (e.g., MD 30300 = 1000 for 1-second cycles). Reload configuration.
Power-cycle the PROFIBUS slave device and verify NCK recognizes it in Diagnostics menu within 30 seconds. If alarm persists, document the PA address and escalate to device manufacturer support.
