Access Diagnostics menu: Siemens > Service > Diagnostics > PROFIBUS > Device List. Verify handwheel device appears with 'OK' status and correct node address matches configuration in MD9062 (HANDWHEEL_AXIS_ASSIGNMENT).

Do not modify PROFIBUS addresses during active machine operation.

Check PROFIBUS cable continuity and connector contacts (typically at control cabinet rear panel and handwheel unit). Use multimeter to verify shielded twisted pair integrity; resistance should be <5 Ohms per meter of cable.

Isolate power before inspecting connectors; PROFIBUS operates at 12V DC.

In NCK > Parameters > Handwheel, verify MD9061 (HANDWHEEL_TYPE) is set to '2' or '3' (PROFIBUS), and confirm MD9063 (HANDWHEEL_ENABLE) = 1. Reload parameters if changed: Service > Parameter Management > Load Parameters.

Monitor PROFIBUS telegram counter in Diagnostics > PROFIBUS > Statistics. If counter stalls, perform PROFIBUS master reset via PLC > Siemens > System > Restart PROFIBUS, then cycle control power.

Verify 24 VDC supply to handwheel unit (typically pin 1/2 on device connector). Check voltage regulation with multimeter; nominal range 22–26 VDC. If voltage <20 VDC, inspect power wiring for breaks or control cabinet PSU output.

Handwheel may be hot; allow 2 minutes cool-down after power removal.

Inspect handwheel PROFIBUS connector (usually M12 or 9-pin D-sub) for corrosion, loose pins, or bent contacts. Clean contacts with isopropyl alcohol on lint-free cloth. Ensure ferrite core is present on PROFIBUS cable.

Isolate handwheel from PROFIBUS network by removing cable. Reset control (Cycle Stop, Emergency Stop reset). If alarm clears, handwheel is source; if alarm persists, PROFIBUS segment is faulty.

Ensure Emergency Stop is activated before removing PROFIBUS connections.

If handwheel is confirmed faulty, request Siemens service replacement unit. Document handwheel model from device label (typically 6FC5 series) and serial number for warranty claim.

Access HMI > Service > Parameters > Handwheel Configuration. Record handwheel node address from MD9062 (HANDWHEEL_NODE_ADDRESS), typically range 3–10. Cross-reference with handwheel device documentation or label.

Use Siemens PROFIBUS Configurator tool or ServiceWorks to scan active PROFIBUS network. Compare detected node addresses with control system parameter set. If handwheel address differs, update MD9062 to match device setting or reprogram handwheel address via dedicated commissioning tool.

Do not change PROFIBUS addresses without full network restart; coordinate with all connected I/O devices.

Check Diagnostics > PROFIBUS > Collision Log for duplicate address warnings. If conflict detected, isolate and reconfigure conflicting device (typically occurs with newly added encoder units or replacement hardware).
