Siemens 9052 - PROFIBUS I/O: Sign of life failure, logical slot / I/O area address

PROFIBUS I/O: Sign of life failure, logical slot / I/O area address

For PROFIBUS/PROFINET only: The sign of life of the slot / I/O area has failed. No data can currently be written to the PROFIBUS I/O devices Control reaction: Interface signals are set. Alarm display.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 9052 indicates loss of cyclic PROFIBUS communication with an I/O device on a specified logical slot, causing the NCK to detect a sign-of-life (watchdog) timeout. This prevents real-time data exchange with distributed I/O modules, halting synchronized servo and spindle operations dependent on PROFIBUS input/output synchronization.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Verify PROFIBUS device power supply and LED indicators on the physical I/O module at the slot address shown in alarm parameter %1. Check for red/amber fault LEDs indicating device failure or communication error.

Do not power cycle the device yet; observe LED patterns first to identify the failure mode.

  2. 2

In Siemens HMI or engineering station, navigate to Diagnostics > PROFIBUS > Slave Status and verify the slot device shows 'OK' or 'Ready' state. If showing 'Not Responding' or 'Error', the device has lost sync.

  3. 3

Check MD20750 (PROFIBUS_WATCHDOG_TIME) parameter value in NCK > System Data menu. Default is typically 500-1000ms. If set too aggressively low for slow devices, increase by 200ms increments and test.

Increasing watchdog time may mask intermittent communication issues; only adjust if consistently losing sign-of-life from stable hardware.

  4. 4

Inspect the PROFIBUS cable (A/B twisted pair) for physical damage, loose connectors, or termination faults. Use a multimeter to verify 390Ω between A-B at the slave terminus and at the master device.

PROFIBUS is voltage-sensitive; measure with power on using isolated meter probes only.
