Siemens 6406 - PLC acknowledge for command is missing

PLC acknowledge for command is missing

There is still no acknowledgement from the PLC for the tool change. The NCK cannot continue processing until it receives this acknowledgement for the specified command number. Possible command number values are described for alarm 6405 Control reaction: NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 6406 occurs when the NCK (Numeric Control Kernel) fails to receive a PLC acknowledgement signal within the expected timeout window for a tool change command. The PLC must actively acknowledge receipt and completion of the M-function or tool change request before NCK can resume block execution. This is a handshake protocol failure between NCK and PLC in the SINUMERIK 840D control architecture.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access PLC program via STEP 7 or HMI diagnostics menu. Navigate to the M-function handler subprogram (check OB271 for M06 tool change, or equivalent OB for the specified command number %2). Verify the subprogram contains logic to set the acknowledgement bit/signal.

Do not modify PLC code without proper version control and machine lockout (EMERGENCY STOP engaged).

  2. 2

In SINUMERIK Operate, open Diagnosis > PLC > Breakpoints or use online debugging to trace PLC execution. Confirm the tool change OB is being called when command %2 is issued. Monitor the acknowledgement signal output (typically a boolean or word variable in the NCK/PLC interface DB).

  3. 3

Check machine parameter MD20070 (MFUNC_PARAM: M-function parameter definition) and verify that command %2 is correctly mapped to the intended PLC subroutine. Confirm timeout parameter MD21400 (MFUNC_PARAM_TIMEOUT) is set appropriately (typically 5000-10000 ms for tool change).

  4. 4

Test tool change manually via MDI (Manual Data Input) with G-code M06 or equivalent. Monitor Diagnosis > Signals to observe NCK waiting state and PLC acknowledgement signal status in real-time. If acknowledgement signal never toggles, the PLC is not executing the handler.
