Siemens 6403 - Tool change not possible. Magazine location number on magazine

Tool change not possible. Magazine location number on magazine

The desired tool change is not possible. The specified magazine location is not contained in the specified magazine Control reaction: NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 6403 is triggered when the NCK attempts to access a tool magazine location that exceeds the physical boundaries or configured capacity of the magazine. This occurs when the tool changer program references a magazine slot number that doesn't exist within the specified magazine assembly, typically due to misconfiguration of magazine parameters (MD20050-MD20059) or incorrect tool offset/pocket assignments in the part program.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Diagnostics > Machine Data > 20000-20099 (Tool Changer) in NCK menu. Verify MD20054 matches the actual magazine slot count. Cross-reference with machine documentation for your specific ATC carousel or linear magazine.

Do not modify MD values during active cycle. Stop NC program execution first.

  2. 2

In part program, check all T-calls and verify requested tool numbers/pockets do not exceed MD20054 value. Use Part Program Trace (Diagnostics > Program Trace) to identify which T-value triggered alarm. Compare against tool table (tool.tbl or equivalent in your control version).

  3. 3

If MD20054 value is incorrect, update it to match physical magazine capacity. Typical carousel magazines have 12-40 locations; verify with hardware specification sheet. After parameter correction, reload part program and test with single dry-run cycle.
