Siemens 840D 61511 - Channel block: Incorrect shoulder position or tool edge D1/D2

Channel block: Incorrect shoulder position or tool edge D1/D2

Siemens SINUMERIK alarm 61511: Channel block: Incorrect shoulder position or tool edge D1/D2. This alarm indicates a fault or error condition on the SINUMERIK 840D control. Refer to the Siemens SINUMERIK alarm documentation for the complete description and remedy.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 61511 fires when a grinding cycle detects that the tool shoulder position or tool edge designations (D1/D2) do not match expected values in the NCK setup function. This typically occurs during tool offset compensation calculations or when tool geometry data conflicts with programmed grinding parameters.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Diagnostics → Tool Management (via HMI or MDI) and verify the tool offset table (TOOL.T / TOOL.D entries). Confirm that D1 and D2 edges are defined for the active tool in the grinding cycle.

Do not modify offsets during active cycle execution.

  2. 2

In the NC program, verify the D parameter matches the physical tool edge geometry. Check the DEFS block or L-word in the grinding cycle for correct D1/D2 reference. Consult the tool offset compensation matrix in Parameters MD18110 (tool offset memory size).

  3. 3

If tool edges were recently created or modified, reinitialize the tool offset table via machine menu: Maintenance → Tool Data → Initialize. Restart the NCK with POWER ON and retry the grinding cycle.

This operation resets all active tool offsets.

  4. 4

Review MD10100 (tool management mode) setting. If set to 0 (disabled), the NCK cannot validate tool geometry. Enable tool management if grinding cycle setup function requires edge assignment validation.
