Siemens 4080 - Incorrect configuration of indexing axis in MD

Incorrect configuration of indexing axis in MD

The assignment of a position table to an indexing axis or the contents of a position table contains an error, or the length of a position table has been parameterized with 0 Control reaction: NC not ready. Mode group not ready, also effective for single axes. NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm. Alarms.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 4080 is triggered when an indexing axis has been improperly configured in the machine data, typically involving incorrect position table assignment, malformed position table contents, or a position table length parameterized as zero. This prevents the NCK from executing indexed positioning commands on the affected axis.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to Diagnostic > Machine Data > Axis-specific parameters. Locate the indexing axis and check MD20090 POSIT_TAB_LEN value.

  2. 2

Verify the value is greater than 0 and matches the actual number of indexed positions required (e.g., 6 for a 6-station turret, 8 for 8-pocket toolchanger).

Ensure value aligns with mechanical design and M19 spindle orient or SPOS commands in part program.

  3. 3

If MD20090 was 0, set it to the correct position count. Save the machine data and perform a cold start (Ctrl+Shift+Delete) or full PLC download.
