Siemens 840D 22053 - Channel block spindle reference mode not supported

Channel block spindle reference mode not supported

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D alarm 22053: Channel block spindle reference mode not supported. This alarm indicates a spindle-related fault or programming error on the specified channel. The affected spindle function cannot be executed.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 22053 occurs when SPOS or SPOSA spindle positioning is configured with an incompatible encoder reference mode (ENC_REFP_MODE). The 840D controller only supports ENC_REFP_MODE = 2 (RefP signal evaluation) for absolute encoder configurations; mode 6 (automatic reference search) is explicitly unsupported for SPOS/SPOSA operations.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Diagnostics > Parameters > Spindle axis > MD30230 (ENC_REFP_MODE). Verify current value and note the spindle axis number and block context from alarm message.

  2. 2

If MD30230 = 6, change to MD30230 = 2. This enables RefP signal-based reference point evaluation required for SPOS absolute encoder operation.

Do not set to value 3 (TTLProbe) or 4 (SSI absolute) for SPOS; only mode 2 is validated

  3. 3

Verify MD30231 (ENC_REFP_DIST) is defined if MD30230 = 2, specifying RefP signal detection distance. Reload spindle parameters and perform a machine cold start (power cycle or NCK reset).

  4. 4

Test SPOS command in manual MDI mode: G94 F500 M3 S1000; SPOS=0; confirm alarm 22053 does not recur.
