Siemens 840D 10880 - Channel block too many empty blocks between two traversing

Channel block too many empty blocks between two traversing

Between 2 blocks containing contour elements and which are to be joined with a chamfer or a radius (CHF, RND), more blocks without contour information have been programmed than provided for in the machine data 20200 CHFRND_MAXNUM_DUMMY_BLOCKS.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Common Causes

  • Excessive empty or non-contour blocks programmed between chamfer/radius operations
  • Machine data 20200 (CHFRND_MAXNUM_DUMMY_BLOCKS) set too low for the program structure
  • Rapid traverse or repositioning blocks inserted between contour segments intended for CHF/RND connection
  • G0 commands or tool change blocks interrupting the contour sequence between chamfer/radius blocks
  • Incorrect post-processor output generating unnecessary intermediate blocks

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Review the NC program around the specified block %2 in channel %1 to identify all blocks between contour elements marked for CHF or RND
  2. 2Count the actual number of empty/non-contour blocks between the two traversing blocks and compare against machine data 20200 CHFRND_MAXNUM_DUMMY_BLOCKS setting
  3. 3Access machine data 20200 and increase the CHFRND_MAXNUM_DUMMY_BLOCKS value to accommodate the program structure, or consolidate empty blocks in the NC code
  4. 4Verify the post-processor or CAM output is not inserting unnecessary G0, G53, or other non-contour commands between contour blocks intended for chamfer/radius application
  5. 5Test the modified program with a reduced feedrate in single-block mode to confirm the contour sequence and chamfer/radius application proceed without alarm
