Okuma OSP Alarm D 4144 - MCS power supply unit overload

MCS power supply unit overload

The MCS power supply unit detected an over load condition on its output. This unit feeds the inverter drives for the axis or spindle named in the object field, and the overload means the connected load drew more current than the supply can deliver.

Common Causes

  • Power unit itself failing or degraded
  • Sustained over load operation from aggressive cutting or rapid cycling
  • Short or excessive load on the DC bus from a downstream inverter

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = Fixed code for power supply unit over load
  2. 2Note the axis name or spindle named in the object field and review what the machine was doing at the alarm: heavy cutting, fast accel cycles, or simultaneous axis moves point to genuine over load operation.
  3. 3Let the power supply unit cool, then retry with reduced feedrate and lighter depth of cut to see if the alarm stays away.
  4. 4Lock out and discharge the DC bus before opening the drive cabinet; bus capacitors hold lethal voltage for several minutes after power-off.
  5. 5Inspect the power supply unit for burnt smell, discolored components, or a tripped internal protector.
  6. 6If the alarm returns under light load with a cool unit, the power unit is the probable faulty location and should be replaced per the manual.
