Okuma OSP Alarm D 4151 - MCS Inverter unit fault

MCS Inverter unit fault

A serious failure happened inside the MCS inverter unit while it and the MCS software were running. The character-string field tells the cause, from control board errors and battery voltage drops to shorted inverter bridges and CPU faults.

Root Cause Summary

Okuma alarm 4151 indicates a DNC communication failure during program transfer via RS-232 serial interface. Most commonly caused by incorrect communication parameters, cable issues, or buffer overflow during large program transfers. Fix typically involves verifying RS-232 settings and connection integrity.

Safety

  • Place controller in EDIT mode and ensure all axes are stationary before initiating DNC transfers—accidental cycle start during transfer with machine in AUTO mode can cause unexpected motion.
  • When inspecting RS-232 connections at rear of control cabinet, verify main power disconnect is locked out if you must access connectors inside the cabinet near live power distribution terminals.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check CNC Communication Settings

Navigate to SETTING > I/O > RS-232C and verify baud rate, data bits (typically 7 or 8), parity (even/odd/none), and stop bits match your DNC software exactly.

Most common settings are 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit

  2. 2

    Verify Handshake Protocol

Check the handshake setting in RS-232C menu - ensure it matches your DNC software (XON/XOFF, RTS/CTS, or none). Mismatch here is a primary cause of 4151.

XON/XOFF is most reliable for long program transfers

  3. 3

    Test Communication

Use a simple text editor or terminal program to send a small test program first. If successful, the issue is likely buffer-related rather than basic communication parameters.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·RS-232 hardware failure suspected after cable testing
  • ·Communication parameters cannot be accessed or changed
  • ·Alarm persists after all troubleshooting steps

Prevention

  • Document working RS-232 settings for future reference
  • Use quality shielded RS-232 cables
  • Implement regular cable inspection schedule
  • Keep backup of known-good communication parameters

Common Mistakes

  • Using straight-through cable instead of null modem
  • Forgetting to match handshake settings between devices
  • Attempting to transfer programs too quickly
  • Using word processors to edit G-code files
