Okuma OSP Alarm D 4163 - MCS Encoder link error

MCS Encoder link error

The communication link between the control and an encoder broke down, so the encoder can no longer report position or speed for the named axis or spindle. The axis is unsafe to move because feedback is unreliable.

Common Causes

  • Encoder link cable or connector damaged, loose or oil-soaked on the problem axis
  • Motor encoder, ABSO SCALE, shaft encoder or stand-alone encoder itself faulty
  • Inverter unit control board failing on the encoder interface

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code YY=00 = Error detected at the motor encoder; code YY=01 = Error detected at the position encoder with shaft; code YY=02 = Error detected at the independent position encoder; code YY=03 = Error detected at ABSO SCALE; code bit0 = Time-out error in encoder communication; code bit1 = Parity error in encoder communication; code bit2 = Double reception error; code bit3 = Double transmission error
  2. 2Note the object axis and read the code: YY tells you where the error was seen (00 motor encoder, 01 position encoder with shaft, 02 independent position encoder, 03 ABSO SCALE); the ZZZZ bits tell the communication fault type, e.g. CRC, timeout or parity.
  3. 3Power down and lock out, then inspect the encoder link cable for that axis along its whole run for crushing, chafing or coolant; reseat both end connectors.
  4. 4Swap or substitute the encoder cable with a known good one if available, since cable faults are the most common cause.
  5. 5If the link still fails, replace the encoder indicated by YY (motor encoder, shaft encoder or ABSO SCALE), then the inverter unit control board last.
  6. 6If the alarm returns after these checks, record the alarm number, code and object and contact Okuma service.
