Okuma OSP Alarm P 0873 - MCS Motor overheat

MCS Motor overheat

The control detected that the axis or spindle motor temperature is abnormally high. The code tells you whether the overheat was sensed at the motor itself, at the position encoder (BL motors sense overheat through the encoder), or both.

Common Causes

  • VAC motor cooling fan failed or heat sink clogged with chips/oil
  • Frequent high-speed CW/CCW reversing and stopping overheating the motor
  • Faulty BL motor
  • Faulty motor encoder (BL motor overheat is detected via the encoder)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 0010 = Motor overheat detected; code 0011 = Overheat detected at the motor itself; code 0012 = Overheat detected at the position encoder; code 0013 = Overheat detected at both the motor and the encoder
  2. 2Read the code on screen: 0010 = motor overheat, 0011 = detected at the motor, 0012 = detected at the position encoder, 0013 = detected at both.
  3. 3Let the motor cool, then check the VAC motor cooling fan is running and clean the heat sink of chips and oil sludge.
  4. 4Review recent operation for high-frequency forward/reverse cycling or heavy cutting; reduce duty and see if the alarm returns.
  5. 5For code 0012/0013 (encoder detection), inspect the motor encoder and its cable/connector before condemning the motor.
  6. 6If cooling and duty are normal and the alarm persists, the BL motor or encoder is suspect; record the alarm number, code and object and contact Okuma service.
