KUKA Robot KRC0310 - ERROR ON AXIS COUPLING

ERROR ON AXIS COUPLING

This alarm indicates a mechanical or electrical failure in the axis coupling system, which transmits torque from the motor to the gearbox or joint mechanism. The coupling may be damaged, misaligned, or have lost synchronization between the motor shaft and driven components, preventing proper axis motion and control.

Common Causes

  • Mechanical wear or damage to the coupling hub, teeth, or elastomeric elements
  • Shaft misalignment between motor and gearbox due to installation error or frame deformation
  • Loose coupling bolts or fasteners causing slippage and loss of torque transmission
  • Foreign debris or contamination jamming the coupling mechanism
  • Encoder synchronization loss due to coupling backlash or slip during high-speed/high-torque operation

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Immediately stop robot operation and ensure all safety interlocks are engaged to prevent unexpected axis movement
  2. 2Visually inspect the affected axis coupling for visible damage, cracks, wear, or debris; check for proper seating on both shafts
  3. 3Verify all coupling bolts and set screws are properly tightened to manufacturer specifications using appropriate torque wrench
  4. 4Check shaft runout and alignment using a dial indicator; misalignment exceeding 0.05mm may indicate frame damage or bearing wear
  5. 5Clear the alarm via teach pendant and perform a slow manual jog test on the affected axis to confirm coupling engagement and smooth operation
  6. 6If alarm persists, replace the coupling assembly with an OEM KUKA component and recalibrate encoder values if applicable
