KRC0054

KUKA Robot KRC0054 - BRAKE DEFECTIVE <axis ...>

BRAKE DEFECTIVE <axis ...>

This alarm indicates that the holding brake on the specified axis has detected mechanical wear or has become defective and can no longer reliably hold the axis in position. The brake is a critical safety component that prevents uncontrolled axis motion when power is removed or during emergency stops. If this alarm is active, the affected axis cannot be safely operated and poses a collision or dropping hazard.

Common Causes

  • Excessive brake wear due to normal operational cycles and age
  • Contamination or debris accumulation on brake surfaces
  • Brake spring degradation or loss of clamping force
  • Electrical connector corrosion on brake solenoid preventing proper engagement
  • Mechanical damage to brake components from impact or misalignment

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Identify which axis is affected from the alarm message and note the axis designation
  2. 2Verify brake voltage supply at the solenoid connector using a multimeter to ensure 24V DC is present
  3. 3Manually test the brake engagement by attempting to move the axis by hand when power is off - it should not move freely
  4. 4Visually inspect the brake assembly for visible wear, cracks, contamination, or loose mechanical components
  5. 5Check the brake connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged wiring and clean contacts if necessary
  6. 6Contact KUKA service or qualified maintenance personnel for brake replacement, as this is a safety-critical component requiring professional replacement and calibration
