KUKA Robot KRC0031 - Drive Temperature Warning

Drive Temperature Warning

Drive Temperature Warning indicates that one or more servo drive units have exceeded their maximum operating temperature threshold during robot operation. The robot will immediately halt all motion and inhibit command execution as a thermal protection measure to prevent irreversible damage to power electronics and motor windings.

Common Causes

  • Continuous high-speed or high-torque movements without adequate cooling cycle time between operations
  • Ambient temperature in the robot cell exceeds specification or ventilation around controller cabinet is blocked
  • Drive cooling fan failure or dust accumulation on servo drive heat sinks reducing thermal dissipation
  • Defective temperature sensor on the drive module providing false or incorrect thermal readings to KRC4 controller
  • Incorrect drive tuning parameters or PID gains causing excessive current draw and heat generation during servo control

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Immediately stop robot operation and allow all servo drives to cool for minimum 30 minutes before restart attempt
  2. 2Check ambient air temperature around the controller cabinet and verify it is within specification of 5 to 45 degrees Celsius
  3. 3Inspect ventilation grilles on KUKA control cabinet and servo drive units for dust or debris obstruction and clean if necessary
  4. 4Use KUKA smartPAD to navigate to Maintenance menu and verify actual drive temperature values for each axis to confirm sensor operation
  5. 5Review the recent teach program or production cycle in WorkVisual for excessive continuous motion and consider adding deliberate cooldown pauses
  6. 6If temperatures remain high during normal operation, contact KUKA service to verify drive calibration and replace potentially defective temperature sensor module
