280-0617

HEIDENHAIN 280-0617 - Traverse mode for retraction not possible

Traverse mode for retraction not possible

Tilted system and tool axis traverse modes are unavailable due to machine configuration limitations.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 280-0617 occurs when attempting to use tilted working plane or tool axis vector retraction modes on a machine that lacks the necessary rotary axes or kinematic configuration. The TNC system detects that the programmed retraction strategy is incompatible with the current machine geometry setup.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check machine parameter MP7500

Access Setup > Machine Parameters > Axes and verify MP7500.x (axis assignment) shows proper rotary axis configuration for your machine's actual hardware.

Compare the parameter settings with your machine's actual rotary axis hardware - mismatched configurations are common after control upgrades.

  2. 2

    Verify kinematic model

Check MP7502 (kinematic model) and ensure it matches your machine's actual rotary axis arrangement (head/head, table/table, or head/table).

Incorrect kinematic models can cause collision during retraction movements.

  3. 3

    Review cycle parameter Q204

In your drilling/milling cycle, change Q204 (2nd set-up clearance) retraction mode from 1 (tilted system) to 0 (tool axis direction).

Use Q204=0 for 3-axis machines or when rotary axes are not properly configured.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Software options need to be purchased/activated
  • ·Machine parameters require kinematic recalibration
  • ·Hardware rotary axes are not functioning properly

Prevention

  • Always verify machine configuration matches programmed retraction modes
  • Use Q204=0 for standard 3-axis operations
  • Validate PLANE functions before running cycles

Common Mistakes

  • Using tilted retraction on 3-axis machines
  • Forgetting to reset working planes between operations
  • Assuming all TNC controls have the same software options enabled
