HEIDENHAIN 235-0044 - Error in HSCI communication

Error in HSCI communication

The HSCI bus communication has encountered an error. Data transfer between the control and a connected unit has been disrupted.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm indicates a breakdown in the HSCI protocol communication layer between the TNC control and PLC subsystem. The root cause is typically either physical layer issues (cabling, connectors, hardware) or timing violations where the PLC cycle time exceeds communication watchdog thresholds. Less commonly, firmware incompatibility or configuration mismatches between NC and PLC software versions trigger this error.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect HSCI cable connections

Power down the machine. Check HSCI cable connections at the CC/PLC module (typically X116 or X118) and at the NC main board (typically X1 HSCI port). Ensure connectors are fully seated and locking clips engaged.

Disconnect mains power and wait for capacitor discharge before handling connections to prevent damage to sensitive HSCI interface circuits.

  2. 2

    Verify cable integrity and shielding

Inspect the HSCI cable for physical damage, kinks, or proximity to power cables. Verify that cable shielding is properly connected to ground at both ends. HSCI uses differential signaling and requires proper EMC practices.

HSCI cables should be routed separately from motor power cables and should not exceed 10 meters without signal conditioning. Use only Heidenhain-approved HSCI cables with proper impedance characteristics.

  3. 3

    Swap HSCI cable if available

Replace the HSCI cable with a known good spare that matches the required specification. After replacement, power up and monitor for alarm recurrence during normal operation.

Keep a spare qualified HSCI cable in your service kit. Document the cable ID and installation date for maintenance records.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·TNC control internal HSCI interface failure confirmed
  • ·Multiple device failures on same bus
  • ·Intermittent communication errors persist after cable and configuration verification

Prevention

  • Perform monthly HSCI cable inspection for damage
  • Maintain proper cable bend radius during installation
  • Keep spare HSCI cables and termination resistors in stock
  • Document HSCI device addresses and configuration parameters

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to power down before checking connections
  • Incorrect termination resistor installation
  • Using damaged cables that appear physically intact
  • Setting duplicate HSCI device addresses
