HEIDENHAIN 231-8A50 - 8A50 Inverter not ready

8A50 Inverter not ready

This TNC 640 error indicates an internal control fault. The issue relates to Power-on of the drive not possible, because an inverter is n.

Root Cause Summary

The inverter module is failing to signal operational readiness to the TNC control due to internal protection circuits remaining active, insufficient DC bus voltage stabilization, or broken communication/signal paths. On Heidenhain systems, the control expects a specific ready handshake from each inverter module before enabling axis movement, and this alarm indicates that handshake is missing or delayed beyond timeout limits.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access drive diagnostics screen

Press MOD key, navigate to 'System Settings > Diagnostics > Drive Diagnosis'. Select the inverter number shown in alarm %1 parameter to view real-time DC bus voltage.

On iTNC 530 and newer, use 'Service Display' for graphical representation of all inverter voltages simultaneously

  2. 2

    Verify AC input voltage

Check measured AC input voltage displayed in drive diagnosis - should be within ±10% of nominal (typically 400V AC three-phase). Also verify phase balance is within 2% between L1, L2, L3.

Measure AC voltage at inverter terminals only with qualified electrician present and proper PPE

  3. 3

    Check DC bus charge time

Power cycle the machine and monitor DC bus voltage rise time in the diagnostic screen. Normal charge time is 2-5 seconds. Slower charging indicates weak rectifier or degraded capacitors.

Record DC bus voltage values over several power cycles - declining peak voltage indicates capacitor aging

  4. 4

    Inspect pre-charge circuit

If DC bus fails to reach 90% of expected voltage, check pre-charge resistor and relay/contactor operation. These components prevent inrush current and must function before main bus energizes.

Allow 5 minutes after power-off for DC bus capacitors to fully discharge before any internal inverter work

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·High voltage inverter repairs needed
  • ·PWM interface card replacement required
  • ·Bus system reconfiguration needed

Prevention

  • Regular inspection of bus cable connections
  • Monitor 24V supply voltage stability
  • Keep inverter cooling systems clean
  • Perform annual drive system diagnostics

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring loose bus connections during routine maintenance
  • Not checking 24V supply voltage under load conditions
  • Replacing expensive inverter modules before checking simple power supply issues
  • Failing to verify bus termination after system modifications
