HEIDENHAIN 231-8B30 - 8B30 Motor temp. too high

8B30 Motor temp. too high

This TNC 640 error indicates an internal control fault. The issue relates to Measured motor temperature is too high.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 231-8B30 indicates the motor temperature monitoring system has detected an overtemperature condition or a failure in the temperature sensing circuit. This alarm fires when the TNC control receives either an actual high temperature signal from the motor's thermal sensor or detects a fault in the temperature monitoring chain including sensor, wiring, or parameter configuration.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Cable Continuity

Disconnect motor encoder cable and measure continuity of temperature sensor wires (typically pins for PT100/PT1000 sensor) using multimeter.

Ensure axis power is OFF before disconnecting encoder cables

  2. 2

    Inspect Cable for Physical Damage

Examine encoder cable along its entire length for kinks, cuts, or damage especially at cable chain entry/exit points and motor connection.

Flex the cable while measuring continuity to detect intermittent breaks

  3. 3

    Verify Connector Pin Contact

Clean and inspect encoder connector pins at both motor and control cabinet ends, ensure proper seating and no corrosion on temperature sensor pins.

  4. 4

    Replace Encoder Cable

If continuity test fails or physical damage found, replace complete motor encoder cable with Heidenhain specified part number.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·TNC input module replacement required
  • ·Motor internal sensor replacement needed
  • ·Persistent overheating with unknown cause

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection during PM
  • Monitor motor load percentages in TNC diagnostics
  • Maintain proper motor cooling and ventilation
  • Verify motor parameters after any motor replacement

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring cable chain wear causing intermittent sensor faults
  • Setting incorrect temperature sensor type in motor parameters
  • Assuming sensor fault when actual overheating exists
  • Not checking motor parameter backup after control updates
