HEIDENHAIN 231-8BB0 - 8BB0 Motor temperature too low

8BB0 Motor temperature too low

This TNC 640 error indicates a thermal issue in the drive system. The control has detected excessive temperatures that could damage hardware if not addressed.

Root Cause Summary

HEIDENHAIN alarm 231-8BB0 indicates the motor temperature sensor is reading abnormally low values, typically below -40°C. This occurs when the KTY84 temperature sensor has a short circuit, incorrect wiring, or hardware failure on the encoder input board.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access encoder diagnostics

Navigate to MOD → Service → Encoder → Select affected axis to view temperature sensor status and raw values.

Normal KTY84 resistance at 20°C should be around 990-1010 ohms

  2. 2

Check sensor wiring at motor connection

Power down system and inspect KTY84 sensor wires (typically pins 8-9 on motor connector) for shorts, damaged insulation, or moisture ingress.

Always lock out power and verify zero energy state before opening motor connections

  3. 3

    Measure sensor resistance

Disconnect sensor wires and measure resistance across KTY84 terminals. Should read 990-1010Ω at room temperature, not near zero ohms.

If reading near zero ohms, sensor or wiring is shorted

  4. 4

    Verify cable routing

Check that temperature sensor cables are routed away from power cables and not pinched in cable carriers or motor mounting.

Temperature sensor cables should have separate shielding from encoder signal cables

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder input board replacement required
  • ·Multiple axes showing same alarm
  • ·Temperature readings remain erratic after sensor replacement

Prevention

  • Protect temperature sensor cables from mechanical damage
  • Use proper cable routing away from power cables
  • Perform regular encoder diagnostics checks
  • Maintain proper motor ventilation

Common Mistakes

  • Using incorrect KTY83 instead of KTY84 sensor
  • Not checking MP7440 sensor type parameter
  • Ignoring cable shield termination
  • Assuming sensor is bad without checking wiring first
