HEIDENHAIN 230-041C - Error bit in safety status (S status) of the HSCI transmission

Error bit in safety status (S status) of the HSCI transmission

This TNC7/TNC 640 error indicates an issue with 230-041C. An error was signaled over the HSCI S status.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm specifically indicates that the safety-relevant portion of the HSCI communication protocol has detected a transmission error, which could be caused by physical signal integrity issues on the HSCI cable, incompatible firmware versions, or hardware failure in the HSCI interface components. Unlike standard communication errors, this affects the safety status word transmission, which is critical for safe torque off (STO) and other safety functions between the TNC control and drive system.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect HSCI Cable Physical Condition

Power down the system and inspect the HSCI cable (typically connected at X116 on MC main board) for kinks, damage, contamination at connectors, or signs of overheating. Verify the cable is routed separately from power cables with minimum 200mm separation.

Disconnect all power and wait 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge before handling HSCI connections.

  2. 2

    Verify Shield Continuity and Grounding

Using a multimeter, measure shield continuity from control end to inverter end (should be <1 Ohm). Verify shield is grounded at both ends through the connector housings. Check shield voltage with AC voltmeter during operation - should read <1V AC referenced to cabinet ground.

On older installations, corrosion at shield termination points is a common culprit. Clean and re-terminate both ends even if continuity appears acceptable.

  3. 3

    Test with Known-Good HSCI Cable

Replace the HSCI cable assembly with a new or known-good cable (Heidenhain part number specific to your system configuration). Ensure proper orientation of D-sub connectors and torque retention screws to 0.5 Nm.

Keep a spare HSCI cable in your maintenance inventory as this is a high-probability failure point and quick to test.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·TNC hardware test failures
  • ·Multiple drive module replacements needed
  • ·Persistent alarms after cable and configuration verification

Prevention

  • Regular HSCI cable inspection and cleaning
  • Maintain proper EMI separation in cable routing
  • Document HSCI configuration changes
  • Monitor HSCI diagnostic status regularly

Common Mistakes

  • Using non-HSCI rated cables
  • Incorrect termination resistor installation
  • Mixing HSCI network speeds
  • Ignoring EMI sources during installation
