HEIDENHAIN 230-0420 - No field angle for drive

No field angle for drive

The field angle for an unaligned motor encoder has not been determined. This may involve encoder serial number mismatches or incorrect encoder type settings in the motor table.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm fundamentally indicates the inverter cannot establish motor commutation because field angle information from the motor feedback device is missing, corrupted, or incorrectly interpreted. The drive requires accurate rotor position to synchronize stator field rotation with rotor position, and without this field angle data, motor control cannot be established safely.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Verify Cable Connections

Power down and check motor encoder/resolver cable connections at motor junction box and at drive connector X41 (power encoder) or X51 (secondary encoder). Ensure locking mechanisms are fully engaged and pins are not bent or corroded.

Disconnect all power and wait 5 minutes for DC bus capacitors to discharge before handling motor or drive connections.

  2. 2

    Inspect Cable for Physical Damage

Examine entire cable length for pinch points, cuts, or damage from coolant/oil contamination. Pay special attention to areas near cable carriers and motor mounting points where flexing occurs.

Resolver cables are particularly susceptible to shield damage which affects excitation signal quality. Ensure shield continuity and proper grounding at drive end only.

  3. 3

    Measure Cable Continuity

Using multimeter, verify continuity of all encoder/resolver signal wires from motor to drive connector. Check for shorts between signal pairs and to shield/ground. Typical resolver has 6 wires: 2 excitation, 2 sine, 2 cosine.

Document pin-to-pin resistance values; resolver windings typically measure 50-200 ohms, encoders show open circuit on signal lines unless powered.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Hardware communication failures persist after cable replacement
  • ·Multiple encoder alignment attempts fail
  • ·Drive amplifier replacement required

Prevention

  • Regular encoder alignment verification
  • Proper parameter backup procedures
  • Systematic cable inspection during maintenance
  • Document encoder serial numbers during installation

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping encoder alignment after parameter changes
  • Incorrect serial number entry
  • Interrupting alignment procedure
  • Modifying encoder parameters without backup
