Haas Alarm 216 - Parts Catcher Fault

Part Catcher

This alarm indicates the part catcher option has encountered a fault condition or failed to respond properly during a cycle. The control monitors the part catcher position switches through the IOCON board inputs and verifies proper deployment and retraction sequences. The alarm will halt machine operation to prevent part damage or collision between the part catcher and machine components.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 216 occurs when the parts catcher fails to reach its commanded position within the timeout period, or when position feedback sensors are not providing proper signals to the NGC control. This is typically caused by mechanical binding, faulty proximity sensors, or incorrect parameter settings in the parts catcher configuration.

Safety

  • Parts may not be caught
  • ⚠️ Parts may fall if catcher fails - clear area below
  • Ensure the machine is in a safe state before performing any maintenance or troubleshooting.
  • Lockout/Tagout the machine's power supply before working on electrical components.
  • Be aware of pinch points and moving parts when working around the part catcher mechanism.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and gloves.
  • If the part catcher is pneumatically or hydraulically operated, relieve pressure before disconnecting any lines.
  • Do not attempt to repair or modify the part catcher mechanism without proper training and authorization.
  • Be careful when removing jammed parts to avoid injury from sharp edges or burrs.
  • If the part catcher is servo-driven, be aware of the potential for sudden movements when power is applied.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Sensor Status in Diagnostics

Press CURRENT COMMANDS, then DIAGNOSTICS. Navigate to I/O and check inputs for Parts Catcher Extended and Parts Catcher Retracted sensors.

Sensors should show opposite states - when one is ON, the other should be OFF

  2. 2

    Inspect Sensor Physical Condition

Open electrical cabinet and visually inspect proximity sensors on parts catcher cylinder. Clean sensors with compressed air and check mounting distance.

Lock out main power before opening electrical cabinet

  3. 3

    Test Sensor Response

Manually cycle parts catcher using MDI commands M15/M16 while monitoring sensor status in diagnostics to verify proper switching.

Sensors typically need 2-4mm gap from target surface for reliable operation

  4. 4

    Replace Faulty Sensors

If sensors don't switch properly, replace the faulty proximity sensor and verify proper wiring connections to the control.

Use only Haas-approved replacement sensors to ensure proper voltage and timing characteristics

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Input card replacement required
  • ·Multiple electrical components failing
  • ·Pneumatic cylinder replacement needed

Prevention

  • Regular cleaning of proximity sensors
  • Maintain proper shop air pressure and filtration
  • Include parts catcher in daily inspection checklist
  • Keep parameter backup current

Common Mistakes

  • Adjusting sensor position without checking gap specification
  • Using incorrect replacement sensors
  • Ignoring air pressure requirements
  • Modifying parameters without backup
