Haas 226 - Z TRANSITION FAULT | Haas CNC Alarm

Z TRANSITION FAULT

The Z-axis encoder transition fault indicates the MOCON board has detected an invalid or unexpected state change in the Z-axis encoder signal during motion or homing. This alarm occurs when the encoder feedback signal shows missing pulses, incorrect quadrature transitions, or noise-induced false counts that violate the expected encoder state machine logic. The machine will stop immediately and the Z-axis servo will be disabled until the fault is cleared and the underlying issue is resolved.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 226 indicates a fault with the side-mount automatic tool changer (ATC) system, typically occurring when the tool changer carousel fails to rotate properly, tools are not seating correctly in the spindle or carousel, or mechanical obstructions prevent normal ATC operation. This alarm is generated by the ATC control logic when position feedback sensors detect improper tool changer positioning or timing violations during tool change sequences.

Safety

  • Keep clear of tool changer
  • ⚠️ DANGER: Stay clear of tool changer during operation and troubleshooting
  • Disconnect power to the machine before performing any electrical troubleshooting. Lockout/Tagout procedures must be followed.
  • Be aware of pinch points and moving parts when working around the SMTC.
  • Ensure proper grounding of the machine to prevent electrical shock.
  • If hydraulic system is involved, be aware of high pressure fluid and potential for injection injuries.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves.
  • Keep clear of the tool changer during operation to avoid injury.
  • Ensure the machine is locked out and tagged out before performing any checks.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check ATC Power and Connections

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS and verify ATC motor power. Check electrical connections at the ATC motor and encoder feedback cables.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before checking electrical connections

  2. 2

    Manual Carousel Rotation Test

In MDI mode, execute M06 T1 command to test carousel rotation. Observe if carousel moves smoothly without binding or unusual noise.

Listen for grinding or clicking sounds that indicate mechanical binding

  3. 3

    Inspect Carousel Drive Components

Check the carousel drive belt tension and condition. Verify the carousel motor mounting bolts are tight and motor shaft coupling is secure.

Lock out power before inspecting mechanical components

  4. 4

    Verify ATC Position Sensors

Check ATC position sensor signals in CURRENT COMMANDS display. Clean sensors and verify proper gap distance to target flags.

Sensor gap should typically be 0.050-0.100 inches for proper detection

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·ATC motor replacement required
  • ·Spindle drawbar mechanism failure
  • ·Multiple sensor failures
  • ·Carousel structural damage

Prevention

  • Maintain regular ATC lubrication schedule
  • Keep ATC area clean of chips and coolant buildup
  • Inspect tool holders regularly for wear and damage
  • Monitor ATC operation sounds for early problem detection

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring unusual ATC noises during operation
  • Using incorrect or damaged tool holders
  • Over-lubricating ATC components causing sensor contamination
  • Attempting tool changes with improperly seated tools
