Haas 221 - B PHASING ERROR | Haas CNC Alarm

B PHASING ERROR

The B-axis rotary encoder phasing is incorrect or not synchronized with motor commutation signals required for proper servo operation. The MOCON detects a mismatch between the encoder feedback signals and expected motor electrical position during power-up initialization or motion commands. This prevents the B-axis from moving until the encoder-to-motor relationship is correctly established.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 221 fires when the NGC control detects the Through Spindle Coolant system is not operating within expected parameters during a TSC command (M88). The control monitors TSC pressure switches, pump motor overload signals, and relay feedback through the machine I/O to verify proper system operation.

Safety

  • Do not run TSC until fault cleared
  • DO NOT operate TSC until fault is cleared
  • Disconnect power to the machine before performing any electrical troubleshooting.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points when working around moving parts of the TSC pump.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves, when handling coolant.
  • Coolant can be slippery. Clean up any spills immediately to prevent slips and falls.
  • High-pressure coolant can be dangerous. Never point the coolant nozzle at yourself or others.
  • Ensure the machine is properly grounded to prevent electrical shock.
  • Do not run TSC until fault is cleared.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and ensure the system is depressurized before working.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check TSC Pressure Switch Status

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and verify TSC pressure switch input state changes when TSC pump runs.

Input typically shows as 'TSC PRESS' or similar designation in the I/O list

  2. 2

    Verify Physical Pressure Switch

Locate TSC pressure switch on coolant manifold and check electrical connections for corrosion or looseness.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before checking electrical connections

  3. 3

    Test Switch Continuity

With TSC pump running, use multimeter to verify pressure switch closes contacts when adequate pressure is reached.

Normal TSC operating pressure is typically 200-300 PSI depending on machine configuration

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Pump motor replacement required
  • ·Electrical cabinet wiring modifications needed
  • ·Pressure switch replacement in difficult location

Prevention

  • Monitor TSC coolant level weekly
  • Replace TSC filters per maintenance schedule
  • Check pressure switch operation monthly

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring low coolant level warnings
  • Not bleeding air after coolant changes
  • Assuming electrical fault when issue is mechanical
