Haas Alarm 1402 - Spindle Load Cell

Spindle Load Cell

This alarm is generated when the spindle load cell sensor reading is out of expected range or has failed calibration checks during power-up or operation. The load cell provides feedback to the MOCON for rigid tapping and spindle load monitoring on models equipped with this sensor. A failed or disconnected load cell prevents proper synchronization during tapping cycles and disables load-based spindle protection features.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1402 fires when the spindle load cell sensor fails to provide valid torque/power feedback to the NGC control system. This prevents the control from monitoring spindle load conditions and enforcing parameter-based load limits, creating potential spindle damage risk.

Safety

  • Spindle may coast or rotate unexpectedly when alarm is active - ensure spindle is fully stopped and workholding is secure before troubleshooting
  • Do not operate machine with load cell disabled or bypassed - spindle overload protection is compromised and catastrophic spindle failure may occur without warning

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Load Cell Voltage

Access DIAGNOSTICS > I/O > ANALOG INPUTS and monitor the spindle load cell voltage reading. Normal range is typically 0-10VDC with spindle stopped showing near 0V.

Compare readings with spindle at different RPMs to verify sensor response linearity

  2. 2

    Verify Load Cell Mounting

Inspect the load cell mounting hardware on the spindle motor for loose bolts, cracked mounting brackets, or physical damage that could affect sensor accuracy.

Ensure spindle is completely stopped and locked out before inspection

  3. 3

    Test Sensor Continuity

Disconnect load cell connector and measure resistance across sensor leads. Typical resistance should be 350-1000 ohms depending on load cell model.

Document resistance values for future reference and trending

  4. 4

    Replace Load Cell

If sensor tests fail, replace the spindle load cell with Haas OEM part, ensuring proper torque specifications on mounting hardware and connector sealing.

Requires spindle removal on most Haas models - consider factory technician

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Load cell replacement required
  • ·NGC control module replacement needed
  • ·Spindle removal necessary
  • ·Calibration procedures beyond basic parameter checks

Prevention

  • Regular inspection of load cell connections during PM
  • Monitor load cell voltage trends in diagnostics
  • Keep load cell connector clean and sealed
  • Avoid exceeding parameter 79 load limits during operation

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring intermittent connection issues
  • Incorrect parameter scaling after control replacement
  • Using non-shielded wire for load cell repairs
  • Attempting load cell replacement without proper spindle support
