Haas 116 - SPINDLE ORIENTATION FAULT | Haas CNC Alarm

SPINDLE ORIENTATION FAULT

This alarm occurs when the spindle drive fails to achieve or maintain the precise angular position required for tool change orientation within the programmed timeout period. The MOCON board sends an orientation command to the spindle drive, which must rotate the spindle to the exact position detected by the encoder within typically 5-10 seconds. If position feedback does not match the commanded orientation angle or the spindle does not reach position in time, this fault is generated and tool change operations are aborted.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 116 fires when the Haas spindle drive detects an internal fault condition and sends a fault signal to the NGC control. The drive's internal diagnostics trigger this alarm to protect the spindle motor and drive from damage due to overcurrent, overtemperature, feedback loss, or hardware failure.

Safety

  • Tool may overheat without coolant

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Spindle Load Conditions

Press RESET to clear alarm, then manually rotate spindle by hand to check for mechanical binding or rough rotation.

Ensure spindle is stopped and locked out before manual rotation

  2. 2

    Verify Drive Parameters

Access SETTING 28 (Spindle Drive Parameters) and verify current limit settings match spindle motor specifications on machine data plate.

Compare with identical machine or factory parameter sheet

  3. 3

    Test Spindle at Low Speed

Use MDI mode to command M03 S100 and gradually increase RPM while monitoring for vibration or unusual noise.

Stop immediately if abnormal sounds or vibration occur

  4. 4

    Inspect Spindle Bearings

Check for bearing wear by listening for grinding sounds and feeling for excessive play or rough rotation during manual spindle movement.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive hardware failure confirmed
  • ·Encoder replacement needed
  • ·Spindle bearing replacement required
  • ·Electrical measurements show power supply issues

Prevention

  • Regular spindle bearing lubrication per maintenance schedule
  • Monitor spindle motor temperature during heavy cutting
  • Keep spindle cooling passages clean
  • Avoid excessive spindle loads and speeds

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring early signs of bearing wear
  • Operating spindle at maximum speed continuously
  • Not allowing proper cooldown time between heavy operations
  • Failing to check encoder cable routing in cable carriers
